Admission to Psychology as an Undergraduate Major
(For Current UT Students)

DECLARING PSYCHOLOGY AS A MAJOR:
The Application Process
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for internal transfer into Psychology as an Undergraduate Major you must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be currently enrolled in courses at UT Austin
- Have an Overall UT GPA and UT PSY GPA of at least 2.5, excluding credit-by-exam, extension, correspondence, and transfer
- Have taken at least one PSY course for a letter grade in residence at UT
- Have completed at least 12 hours for a letter grade in residence at UT
- Have attended an Internal Transfer Information session
- Have submitted a complete application by the posted deadline
INFORMATION SESSIONS
In order to determine if Psychology is the right major for you (before you go through the entire application process), it is highly recommended that you attend one of our Internal Transfer Information sessions. Attending one of these sessions serves to enhance your understanding of Psychology as a major at UT, and therefore strengthens your application.
Sessions for Summer 2009 and Fall 2009 admission wil be held in March 2009 and April 2009. Exact dates, times and locations will be posted here as soon as they become available.
SELECTION OF PSYCHOLOGY MAJORS
The number of students who want to major in Psychology exceeds the number who can be adequately instructed by the faculty. There are likely to be more students who will be eligible to apply to the Psychology major than can be admitted, so meeting the minimum hour and GPA requirements is not a guarantee of admission to the Psychology major. A number of criteria will be used to determine which applicants will be admitted to the major. The primary criteria will be overall GPA and hours taken at UT-Austin. Other factors that will be considered include the types of courses taken (with preference given to Psychology and related disciplines, e.g., Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Philosophy, and Social Sciences), and other evidence of long-term interest in Psychology (e.g., participation in laboratory research, work in health or human services, etc.). Students who have completed more than 75 hours of college coursework will receive lower priority in admission and will be encouraged to consider other options.
To get a sense of where you might stand based on your total hours and UT GPA, take a look at our ADMISSION STATISTICS for past semesters.
