Introduction to Developmental Psychology MWF 2:00-3:00 UTC 2.102A Woolley
Meets with W S 345 (Topic 6) Description: This course is meant to provide advanced introduction to the study of developmental psychology from conception through the grade school years. Emphasis will be on normal physical, social, cognitive, and language development, although development in various special populations is also addressed. In addition to learning basic developmental concepts, students are expected to become familiar with various research designs and procedures that have been used in the research literature. Students are also made aware of existing controversies in the literature, and as such are encouraged to view developmental psychology as an exciting, evolving discipline. Texts: Required: Sroufe, Cooper & Dehart. Child development: Its nature and course. 1996 Optional: Dehart. Child development: Its nature and course (study guide). Grading and Requirements: Exams: 3; multiple choice with some short essay from textbook, lecture, and film; 25% of grade each. Final: 25%. Makeup Exams given only with a physician's note. Prerequisites: Psychology 301 with a grade of C or better, Psychology 418 or an equivalent statistics course with a grade of C or better, and upper division standing.
