The Effects of Stress on Memory and the Brain
40350
Undergraduate Research Project

Faculty: David Tucker, Ph.D.
Contact: Victoria Beckner
Email: beckner@mail.utexas.edu Phone: 653-4966
Description:

I am studying how stress (induced experimentally) influences our memory for events. We will be using a new neuropsychological task (a brief film and questionnaires) and measuring salivary cortisol to help determine which memory processes are affected by stress (and by inference, which areas of the brain). I am very interested in letting research assistants contribute to the creative and interpretive aspects of the study, and our lab group is typically a very fun, lively, and rigorous bunch!

Qualifications: Looking for individuals who are highly motivated, interested in learning, reliable, with a sense of humor. Would prefer a 2-semester commitment.

Duties:

10 hours a week, including a weekly lab meeting. Research will primarily include the hands-on work of “running groups” (giving instructions, inducing a psychosocial stressor, showing a film, administering the memory tests). Additional duties may include scheduling, data entry (minimal), and prep work for groups. Tasks can be tailored to individual interests, and can also include data analysis, cortisol assays, and literature searches if desired.
