Partially fulfills Area I requirement for psychology Description: Techniques for psychological research illustrated in a series of laboratory experiments. Emphasis in lecture is on advanced material in designing and analyzing research studies, including complex analysis of variance, multiple regression analysis, and various forms of post-hoc testing. Emphasis in lab is on the students developing original research ideas from their inception through a final project. Texts: Kantowitz, B.H., Roediger, H.L., & Elmes, D.G. Experimental Psychology: Understanding Psychological Research. (6th edition). 1997. Grading and Requirements: Performance in the lecture section of the class will be assessed by a midterm and a final exams. Both of these exams will be take-home exams. Each will involve two long essays, several short answer questions, and a series of problems. Each exam will contribute 25% of the studentŐs final grade. The lab section of the class will consist of two projects, one a correlational study and the other a manipulative experimental study. The final write-up of each study will contribute 25% to the final grade. Prerequisites: Psychology 301 with a grade of C or better, Psychology 418 or an equivalent statistics course with a grade of C or better, upper division standing, a GPA of 3.0 in Psychology courses taken at the University, and a major in psychology.
