COMPUTERS

Q. What is the recommended procedure for ordering and setting up computers that are purchased using University funds?

A. Consult with the PSY Tech Staff beforehand about any computers, printers, or other peripherals that you intend to order.

Place orders through the BUSINESS OFFICE so that proper University procedures are followed with respect to Purchasing and Inventory property tags. This also ensures that you will get the best educational price for the equipment, and circumvents unnecessary delays in such things as grant reimbursement.

The Tech Staff will pick up the computer or printer from the Business Office and fully configure it according to Dept and UT requirements. Computers will be equipped with anti-virus and security software, and whatever software that is licensed and provided by UT.

The computer or printer will be set up in the room of your choosing.

Failure to follow these procedures results in unnecessary delays in the proper processing of computers and printers, and creates unwanted headaches for both Psychology staff and end users.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Q. My professor needs a camcorder to VCR tape converter. Students videotape their assessment interviews with a camcorder, but then she needs to convert it to VCR to play it on her home machine for supervision. Do we have a such a capability here or would someone know where I would look to find such a thing?

A. According to Mike, "All depends on the type of camcorder. If it's one of our miniDV camcorders, there are 3 decks in the second floor lab that will dub miniDV to VHS. We don't have equipment for Hi-8, Hi-8 Digital, or VHS-C formats. In that case they'd have to bring the camera they used of any of those formats and plug it into our decks in the lab to do a conversion."

EMAIL

Q: How am I affected by the new changes to the Psychology email server?

A: We have begun the migration of users from our old PSY email server to the shiny new one. This transition will be transparent for all faculty and staff computers, as well as to your email recipients. The Tech Staff will make the configuration changes for you, and we will not migrate a user over until we have had a chance to personally explain the changes and what is required to change your home email configuration.

Although the full email address of the new server will be "yourname@MAIL.PSY.UTEXAS.EDU", your current email will be configured such that your official address will continue to appear to recipients as the familiar "yourname@PSY.UTEXAS.EDU"; and this naming convention will become permanent once the old server is officially retired.

The most useful feature of the new server is the ability to check your email with webmail (or in geekspeak - IMAP), and to use the "leave mail on server" option which facilitates checking email from more than one computer (ie., office, and home or laptop). A quick tutorial on webmail is available at http://www.utexas.edu/its/webmail/steps/index.html .

PLEASE NOTE: The only foreseeable situation where this change in address may be problematical is for users who routinely post messages to "listserve" mailing groups. These users may have to re-subscribe to their listserve affiliations using the new "long" version of the address.

Naturally, the Tech Staff (1-2006/HELP@psy.utexas.edu) will be available to assist with instructions on configuring the new email of home computers and laptops.

EUDORA and MAC OSX

Q: When I click on an email address in my browser window, it opens in Mac Mail. How can I make Eudora my default email application instead?

  • Open Apple's Mail program
  • Go to its Preferences (under the Mail menu, top left corner)
  • In the General section is a setting for " Default Email Reader", currently it points to Apple's Mail.
  • At the bottom of the available options choose"Select..."
  • Navigate your way into the Applications Folder, then the eudora folder, and point it at the Eudora application.

Q: Is there is a mechanism within Eudora for Replying to ALL eddresses mentioned in a message?

A: Hold down the "Option" (aka "alt") button when you hit the Reply button. You can also do it by holding down Option and going to the "Message" menu. When holding Option, the menu item "Reply" turns into "Reply to All".

PRINTERS

Q: I am on Mac OSX and cannot find the printer I want to print to on the list of available departmental printers. How can a add a printer to the list?

A: Go to System Preferences and select "Print & Fax". Click on the "+" sign to add a printer. Select a printer from the list.

CLASSROOMS

Q: The right projector is not showing the computer or the document camera in SEA 2.122. It turns on, but I can't display any of the options, so I have to teach off one screen. What should I do?

A: The projectors in the 418 and 458 labs sometimes require a 2-button approach:

  • (1) the lighted control strip on the desk under the doc cam; AND
  • (2) (on the remote control) the choice of either "computer" for the computer and doc cam, or "video" for the DVD and VHS players only the lighted strip buttons are required to toggle between doc cam and computer

Library and Conference Rooms

Q: Are there guidelines for guest presenters in the Psychology Library and other Seay conference rooms?

  • Contact the Tech Staff (HELP@psy.utexas.edu/1-2006) to inform us of the date and time of the presentation, so that we can be certain one of us will be available to assist in setting up any audio-visual equipment.
  • Allow for at least 10 minutes prior to the presentation to permit us to test the speaker's laptop, to ensure that it is fully compatible with our existing system AND that the system is properly functioning.
  • Gary, Bruce, and Mike are the most familiar with these projection systems, and equally able to assist with the laptop-projector setup.
  • Remember that ALL Seay conference rooms have telephones installed so that users can call immediately (1-2006) if problems arise.
  • Following these guidelines should help presentations run more smoothly, and will significantly avoid last minute panic situations.

Q: We want to show a videotape (vhs) in one of the conference rooms. How do I set this up?

A: There's a media console in the conference room that has DVD/VHS/document camera capabilities. Instructions are on the conference room table. Login for the touch pad control system is "1988". All of our conference rooms have these systems.

SOFTWARE

PDF

Q: How can I convert to PDF using Microsoft Office 2007 programs?

A: Download the 2007 Microsoft Office Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS. This download allows you to export and save to the PDF and XPS formats in eight 2007 Microsoft Office programs. It also allows you to send as e-mail attachment in the PDF and XPS formats in a subset of these programs.

WINDOWS NT SERVICES

Q: How I can sign up to get Remote Desktop Server for stats?

A. You can sign up for a Windows NT Services account yourself. This service is run by ITS (Information Technology Services)

SPSS

Q: Is there a difference in the way the versions of SPSS in the computer labs handle filtered data between the mac and the pc?

A: Yes! On the PC, if you use "data-> select cases" to filter out, say, reaction times over 2 seconds, then any analyses you do from there on out will ignore the filtered cases, as expected. On the Mac, this does not happen. In the 'select cases' dialog box', you have to select 'unselected cases are deleted' (which permanently deletes those data from the file) in order for the filtering to have any effect.

Save a copy of the data file before doing any filtering! ...and thanks to Dr. Cormack for alerting everyone on this issue.

Q: Can I get a copy of SPSS to install on my office computer?

A: We do not have sufficient SPSS licenses to hand out to individuals, and UT is very adamant about keeping software licenses above board.

From The Division of Statistics & Scientific Computation:

SPSS is available from ITS Software Distribution and the Campus Computer Store. ITS Software Distribution manages the SPSS site license and sells annual licenses to UT affiliates. The Campus Computer Store sells the SPSS GradPack to UT graduate students. For a full summary of SPSS licensing options, see the following page: http://www.utexas.edu/its/products/spss/purchase.php.

Converting your SPSS data files to other software packages:

Most statistical software packages will import SPSS and where SPSS data cannot be directly imported, we are confident that we can assist with converting SPSS data sets to the statistical package of your choice. Please contact us at stats@ssc.utexas.edu for assistance with converting SPSS to alternative file formats.

Please see our list of short courses for software training opportunities: http://ssc.utexas.edu/courses/short.

In addition, please see the following page for a summary of our free consulting services through which we can assist with individual questions regarding statistical software and statistical modeling:

ENDNOTE

Q: Is there an alternative to using ENDNOTE?

A: There is a very useful citation and document filing tool that works out of the Firefox Browser. It grabs citations off of web pages of almost any sort (not just Scirus or ISI, but stuff like Amazon for instance) and files them. It's free and developed by people at George Mason U. Open source. A great alternative to EndNote. It also has an add-on for MS-Word that seems to work seamlessly.
