Post Doctoral Training Opportunity at the University of Oregon

The Development and Psychopathology Training Grant (DEEP) is a fellowship program funded by NIMH to the Child and Family Center. This grant has been ongoing at the University of Oregon for 10 years, and we anticipate that we will receive the next 5 years of funding starting July 1, 2009. The training program is organized through the Child and Family Center (please http//see <http://cfc.uoregon.edu>cfc.uoregon.edu). The grant will provide trainings in skills relevant to diversity in developmental processes and the intervention science. Third, the training will focus on translational research, integrating areas of research such as neuroscience, genetics, developmental psychology, intervention techniques and change processes relevant to better understanding the etiology of mental health problems in children and adolescents and innovating new, more effective interventions (prevention and treatment).

We have two, one year post-doctoral training fellowships in Development and Psychopathology at the CFC beginning July 1 2009. The 1 year stipend provides full-time FTE through the summer for research in development and psychopathology and intervention science. Two years of funding is available contingent upon performance. Applications that focus their areas of interest on research related to the Child and Family Center will have preference.

We have 5 ongoing federally funded intervention trials (see http:<http://cfc.uoregon.edu>cfc.uoregon.edu) which afford longitudinal data sets, several family and peer observational data sets, and an ongoing EEG high density array lab involving children and families. Meta-analysis of experimental studies of risk and behaviour

Salary: £23,449 per annum

The postholder will be involved in an ESRC funded project working with Dr Peter Harris and Professor Paschal Sheeran to conduct a quantitative review (meta-analysis) of intervention studies that have been successful in changing key variables in risk appraisal. The review will also examine whether it is necessary to enhance coping processes (e.g., self-efficacy) at the same time as risk appraisal, and will identify intervention characteristics and methodological factors that determine the strength of impacts on intentions and behaviour.

Applicants should have a PhD or be near to finishing a PhD (or have equivalent experience in Psychology or a relevant discipline). A good working knowledge of risk perception research or experience in conducting meta-analysis would be desirable. This post is fixed term 12 months, with a start date of 1 September 2009 and an end date of 31 August 2010.

Closing date for applications: 11 May 2009

Cognitive Psychology - Are we beings that act solely in response to external stimuli or can the wealth of ideas and thoughts we possess spring from a yet unknown corner of the mind? Cognitive psychology is often referred to as the science of the mind. By exploring how we organize and process the abundance of information we receive from our environment, cognitive psychologists reveal what is going on behind the scenes of mental processes.

Taking a theoretical approach, students examine cognitive processes such as perception, attention, learning and memory, language, intelligence, and creativity. They gain a greater understanding of this innovative field by exploring the progression of ideas that led to the Cognitive Revolution, core research methodologies within the discipline, and fundamental neurological structures involved in cognitive processes. Through observational studies, group discussions, contemporary readings, and laboratory findings, students begin to perceive human beings as information processors. Students leave this course with a richer understanding of how people make sense of the complex world around them.

Foundations of Psychology - Social theorist and psychoanalyst Erich Fromm wrote, "Man is the only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he has to solve." Psychology attempts to systematically solve this problem of who we are by providing a coherent framework for describing and explaining behavior; it is the science of behavior and mental processes.

This course introduces students to the major content domains in modern psychology: bio-psychological, developmental, cognitive, and social. Students begin by considering different methodologies and learning what constitutes an effective research design. With this foundation, students examine important topics in the field, including sensation and perception, learning and memory, child and adult development, and abnormal psychology and psychotherapy. Throughout the course, students develop the analytical and research skills necessary for future studies in the discipline. The course culminates with students designing research projects in their areas of interest.
