NEWS 1999-2001University of Texas at Austin researchers key Players in $7.2 million research grant UT news release announces new research conducted by the Center of Excellence for Patient Safety Research and Practice. Dr. Robert Helmreich leads the Austin component of the team. (November 2001) James Pennebaker's research of word choices of suicidal and non-suicidal poets is featured in the July 25, 2001 issue of UT's ONCampus, "Dead Poet's Society? Distinctive features in language of poets could serve as linguistic predictors of suicide, UT Austin professor finds" (August 2001) Ed Pasanen, Social Science/HR Associate IV, is featured in the July 2002 issue of the Liberal Arts Insider. Ed recently received the University's highest staff award for 2002, the University of Texas at Austin Employee Excellence Award, for extraordinary contributions to the University and its mission. On August 1, 2001 UT's Office of Public Affairs published a report on Samuel Gosling's development of a new field in animal personality in "Animals have personalities, emotions and thoughts, just as humans do, UT Austin psychologist says". The report notes that Professor Gosling will be featured in a on a Discovery Channel segment in September. (August 2001) Female "Viagra drug" underway: Article from the June 26, 2000 edition of the Daily Texan describing Cindy Meston's research. (June 2001) The Austin American Statesman featured an article on brain injury and research of David Tucker(adjunct Associate Professor) and graduate student, Kari Leonard. The article, "Trying to help 'walking wounded.'" appeared on the front page of the Metro section, 3/11/01. Searle Scholars Program nominee and APA Distinguished Alumnus Award-winner, Adriana Alcantara, is featured in a news release by the UT Office of Public Affairs, "UT Austin professor boldly probes the universe that is the human brain". (January 2001) Gary Zuker, computer engineer for the Psychology Department, is featured in an article titled "A Hobbit House" in the March/April 2000 edition of "Natural Home" magazine. Gary spent 3 years researching, designing and building his house out of straw and clay. Cindy Meston's research is featured in the March 2000 issue of "Fitness" magazine. Dev Singh and David Buss are both quoted in the Feb 7 2000 issue of "U.S. News & World Report" in an article titled "Why We Fall in Love" by Josh Fischman. Judith Langlois and Dev Singh's research are mentioned in the January 2000 issue of "National Geographic" magazine in an article titled "The Enigma of Beauty". Quotes from the article: "What's an attractive face? It's a symmetrical face. Most iimportant, it's an averaged face...Extremes are off-putting and generally not attractive, Langlois says." "Studies by psychologist Devendra Singh at the University of Texas show a preference for the classic hourglass-shaped body with a waist-hip ration of seven to ten." The Life & Arts section of the the February 10, 2000 issue of the "Austin-American Statesman" ran a feature on David Buss' new book "The Dangerous Passion". James Pennebaker's research on the health benefits of writing is featured in the April 26, 1999 issue of "Newsweek" in "Your Health: Pen Paper, Power! Confessional writing can be good for you", by Claudia Kalb. UT psychology professor says ear emissions may be related to sexual preference: Article from the April 5, 1999 issue of the Daily Texan describing Dennis Mcfadden's research. The March 30, 1999 issue of On Campus features news on Robert Helmreich's research on how cultural factors affect behavior in complex settings such as cockpit crews and medical teams. |
