Seay, a good friend of the Department of Psychology, died on February 7, 2009 at the age of 94. One reason the Seay Psychology Building is as impressive as it is can be attributed to the generosity and vision of Mr. and Mrs. Seay as well as to their daughter Sally Stout. Seay's legacy will have a direct impact on all of us for years to come. The memorial service for Seay was held in Dallas. ZENZI GRIFFIN APPOINTED FELLOW OF APA DIVISION 3 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEEFor her outstanding contributions to the field of experimental psychology, Zenzi Griffin has been approved as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association's Division 3 Executive Committe (Experimental Psychology). Dr. Griffin studies the processes that allow people to express anything using spoken language. She has been teaching at UT since 2008. Web page CARYN CARLSON RECEIVES THE 2009 RAYMOND DICKSON CENTENNIAL ENDOWED TEACHING FELLOWSHIPCaryn Carlson, professor of clinical psychology, has received the 2009 Raymond Dickson Centennial Endowed Teaching Fellowship. This award recognizes teaching excellence in the College of Liberal Arts. Dr. Carlson received her Ph.D. in psychology in 1984 from the University of Georgia. She joined the Psychology Department in 1989. For most of her career, her research program focused on children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and over the years, she has taught undergraduate "Abnormal Psychology", "Behavior Therapy", and "Behavior Problems of Children". She has also taught an unusually large variety of graduate-level courses. In recent years she has changed her focus to the field of Positive Psychology and well-being. A course for which she's developed a particular passion, "Positive Psychology and the Good Life", has received rave reviews from students, many of whom are emerging from Carlson’s courses with a different outlook on life. One of her students, Sonya Crocker, was chosen for the 2008 U.T. Outstanding Student Award. Dr. Carlson has served as Director of the Clinical Psychology Training Program until recently, when she was selected as the new Associate Chair of Psychology. (posted June 2009) ANN REPP RECEIVES THE 2009 HARRY RANSOM AWARD FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCEAnn Repp, senior lecturer with the department since 1995, has been chosen to receive the Harry Ransom Award for Teaching Excellence from the University of Texas. The award is given annually to one faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts. Since receiving her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University in 1994, Dr. Repp has taught both lower and upper division courses, including "Statistics & Research Design", "Introduction to Developmental Psychology", "Controversial Issues in Development", and "Adolescent Development", among others. Her research has included conceptual development and language acquisition, but in recent years she has focused on undergraduate course development--identifying developmental issues that resonate with undergraduates, and devising course formats that maximize student engagement. Repp is the recipient of the Silver Spurs Teaching Award in 2001, Outstanding Service Learning Faculty Award in 2005, and the Raymond Dickson Centennial Endowed teaching Fellowship in 2006. (posted June 2009) ART MARKMAN RECEIVES THE 2009 RAYMOND DICKSON SWC CENTENNIAL ENDOWED TEACHING FELLOWSHIPArt Markman, Annabel Iron Worsham Centennial professor of psychology and marketing, has been selected to receive the 2009 Raymond Dickson SWC Centennial Endowed Teaching Fellowship. The award recognizes College of Liberal Arts faculty for excellence in teaching substantial writing component courses. Dr. Markman received his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois in 1992, and has taught courses in cognitive psychology at the University for eleven years. His research is on motivation and high-level cognition (thinking, reasoning, and decision making). He is one of the department's top mentors of graduate students, and his work with the undergraduate Honors students has been highly regarded. Markman is the executive editor of the journal Cognitive Science, and is currently the Interim Director of the Imaging Research Center. He also writes a Personality blog, "Ulterior Motives", for Psychology Today online. (posted June 2009) Markman Web Page | Similarity & Cognition Lab JACQUI WOOLLEY NAMED AS INTERIM CHAIR FOR THE 2009-2010 ACADEMIC YEARDevelopmental psychologist Jacqui Woolley has been named as interim chair of the Department of Psychology for the 2009-2010 academic year. Dr. Woolley has been associate chair for the last four years. Our current chair, James Pennebaker, will be on leave from August 1, 2009 though July, 2010. At the end of his leave he will resume leadership of the department for another four-year. term. (May 2009) CARYN CARLSON NAMED AS ASSOCIATE CHAIR OF PSYCHOLOGYClinical psychologist and Director of Clinical Training, Caryn Carlson, will be the next Associate Chair of the Department. She will continue in this role when James Pennebaker returns from leave. In addition to the usual tasks, Caryn will work to build an active development program. (May 2009) MARTITA LOPEZ APPOINTED NEW DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL TRAININGMartita Lopez, currently Clinic Director and Associate Director of Clinical Training has accepted the position of Director of Clinical Training (DCT). The DCT position is typically a complex role that requires the coordination of faculty, clinical graduate students, clinicians in the community, and various clinically-related institutions within and outside the university. Martita's background makes her ideally suited for this. PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT MOURNS THE DEATH OF CLARKE BURNHAMThe Psychology Department has learned that Clarke Burnham died on the morning of March 13, 2009. Although Clarke's death from cancer was not entirely unexpected, it occurred more quickly than anyone thought. The funeral will be on Monday at 10 AM at All Saints Episcopal Church at 209 West 27th Street. Clarke started in the Department of Psychology in 1965 after completing his PhD with Leon Festinger at Stanford. Clarke, who was primarily interested in perception and cognition, was a mainstay of the Psychology Department for a generation. He single-handedly ran the graduate program from 1982 until his retirement in 2005. From 1996 until his retirement, Clarke served as the chair of the university IRB. Indeed, when he retired, it took two people in the Psychology Department and half a dozen in the IRB office to replace him. The loss of Clarke, and recently, Carl Creeger, sadden us all. MARTITA LOPEZ RECEIVES AWARD FROM THE SOCIETY OF BEHAVIORAL MEDICINEMartita Lopez, Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Clinical Psychology Training Clinic in the Department of Psychology, has won the 2009 Distinguished Clinical Mentor Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine. Dr. Lopez will travel to Montreal, Canada, in March, to receive the award at the annual meeting of the Society. Dr. Lopez is teaching 3 courses this semester, Psy 194Q (Adv Practicum in Clin Psy), Psy 393K (Clinical Practicum II), and Psy 394Q (Adv Practicum in Clin Psy). (January 2009) REBECCA NEAL-BEEVERS PROMOTED TO ASSISTANT PROFESSORClinical faculty member Rebecca Neal-Beevers has been promoted to Assistant Professor of Psychology. Dr. Neal-Beevers received her Ph.D. in Child Clinical and Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Miami in 2002. She completed her clinical internship in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University. Rebecca stayed on at Brown after internship to complete a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Brown University Center for the Study of Children at Risk (CSCR). She joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in January 2005. Dr. Neal-Beevers is teaching Psy 389K (Theory & Tech of Assessment I) this semester. (January 2009) TWO NEW FACULTY MEMBERS BEGIN SPRING 2009 SEMESTERAssistant Professor Marie Monfils obtained her Ph.D. from the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience. She conducted a postdoctoral fellowship at New York University in Joseph LeDoux’s lab. She is currently pursuing 2 research streams: (1) examining the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in synaptic and structural plasticity associated with fear memory consolidation, and (2) investigating different post-consolidation manipulations that can persistently attenuate fear memories. Dr. Monfils will be teaching PSY 341K (Brain Mechanisms of Learning/Memory) this semester. Jonathan Pillow, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience, received his Ph.D. in Neural Science from New York University in January 2005. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at University College London, working on computational models of spiking neurons in the visual pathway. This semester Dr. Pillow is teaching PSY 394U (Seminar in Cognition and Perception). He is affiliated with the Center for Perceptual Systems. (January 2009) DEBORAH STOTE ELECTED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORSPsychology research associate and lecturer, Deborah Stote, has been elected to the board of directors for the Planned Living Assistance Network (PLAN). PLAN is a psychiatric assistance program that helps people with mental disorders live in their community. STUDENTSPsychology Undergraduate students win Rapoport-King ScholarshipsTwo Psychology Undergraduate students were awarded Rapoport-King Thesis Scholarships in October 2009. They will be receiving $3,000 for their senior year and their faculty mentors will receive a $1,000 research stipend to work closely with the students. Michael’s dissertation supervisor was Tim Schallert. Rueben Gonzales, Randy Diehl, Yvon Delville, and Juan Salinas served as Michael's dissertation committee members. The Outstanding Dissertation Award was established in 1979 by the Graduate School to recognize exceptional work by doctoral students and to encourage the highest levels of scholarship, research, and writing. Three awards of $5,000 each are given annually. Using an animal model, Michael’s dissertation showed that a high dose of alcohol interfered with the consolidation of previously established memory. His work went on to examine underlying neural processes involving, among others, glutamate NMDA receptors that might explain his findings. At a methodological level, Michael developed a novel procedure for quantifying memory in his dissertation, which is now being used by leading memory investigators around the world. This award is based on her abilities and accomplishments as well as her potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the U.S. science and engineering enterprise. (April 2009) PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS INDUCTED INTO PHI BETA KAPPAThe University of Texas at Austin Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa will induct thirty Psychology students for Spring 2009. Students must have a GPA of 3.70 (with less than thirty transfer hours) or a 3.75 (with more than 30 transfer hours) in their graduating year to be eligible to join, or have a GPA of 3.9 in their junior year to be eligible to join. This year's induction ceremony will take place in the Ballroom of the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center on Sunday, May 10, 2009.

(April 2009) SASHA WOLOSIN AWARDED APA DIVERSITY IN NEUROSCIENCE FELLOWSHIPSasha Wolosin, a second year graduate student working in the lab of Dr. Alison Preston, has been awarded an APA Diversity in Neuroscience Fellowship effective July 1, 2009 for one year. The DPS Fellowship is awarded from a National Research Service Award Institutional Training Grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). This award will fund Sasha's continuing research using functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine how reward influences episodic memory in the human brain. (April 2009) CARIN PERILLOUX RECEIVES DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPCarin Perilloux, a fifth year graduate student in the lab of Dr. David Buss has been selected from an outstanding field of 30 applicants to receive a doctoral fellowship from the Austin Branch of the American Association of University Women for the 2009-2010 academic year at the University of Texas at Austin. The award is meant to help offset the costs of completing her dissertation. Ms. Perilloux is investigating individual differences and context effects in men's misperception of women's sexual interest. (April 2009) CLINICAL STUDENT IS RECIPIENT OF NIH RESEARCH SUPPLEMENT AWARDClinical psychology graduate student, Yasisca Pujols, is a recent recipient of an NIH Research Supplement Award for the promotion of diversity in health-related research. With the year-long funding, she will continue her work in female body image by conducting analyses that will examine changes in body part esteem among survivors of child sexual abuse undergoing psychological treatment. (March 2009) PSYCHOLOGY STUDENT AND LONGHORN SCHOLAR WINS MIKE WACKER AWARDPsychology major June Abbey is the recipient of the Mike Wacker Award. The award is given to students who have demonstrated perseverance and determination to overcome hardship. A tragic car accident resulting in her hospitilzation in 2005 failed to prevent her from continuing on the path to her degree in Psychology. Because of her hard work and dedication in the face of adversity, she will graduate this May 2009. Read more... PSYCHOLOGY GRADUATE STUDENT RECEIVES 2009 TEXAS EXES TEACHING AWARDSandra Pahl, a graduate teaching assistant in clinical psychology, is the recipient of the 2009 Texas Exes Teaching Award. The $500 awards recognize individuals whose commitment to students had an effective, positive influence on the educational experience and lives of those they teach. Recipients are selected solely by students through college councils and coordinated by the Senate of College Councils. This year's recipients will be honored on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center. Barbara has worked in the business office of the Department for seven years, handling a variety of tasks including grant personnel matters, purchasing, copiers, and work orders. Her cheerful presence and excellent service over the years has won the regard of all her colleagues. PSYCHOLOGY UNDERGRADUATE ADVISOR ON COMMITTEE OF AWARD-WINNNG WEB SITEThe National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) has selected the College of Liberal Arts "Summer Freshmen Class Web Site" as a winner in the 2009 Advising Technology Innovation Award category. Psychology undergraduate advisor, Joel Mendolusky, was the key member of the CoLA Summer Freshmen Committee who modified the website. They will be honored with a recognition plaque at the special Awards Ceremony and Reception being held at the annual NACADA conference in San Antonio this fall. (April 2009) Liberal Arts Advising Web site Wins National Advising Award Summer Freshmen Class Web Site DAVID COLLINS RECEIVES THE UNIVERSITY OUTSTANDING STAFF AWARDDavid Collins is one of 30 University employees to receive the University of Texas Outstanding Staff Award. As Administrative Associate for the Clinical Psychology program, David maintains client records, conducts telephone intake screenings with potential clients, and provides support to students working in the clinic. He has the responsiblity of ensuring the program maintains accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA) by submitting annual reports regarding faculty and student activities, and maintaining a website detailing program information for potential applicants. Receipients of the award receive $1500 and his/her picture taken with the President. Award recipients will be formally recognized at The President's Awards for Outstanding Staff Members on May 7, 2009 from 2 - 4pm. (April 2009) MEMORIAL SERVICE SCHEDULED FOR CARL CREEGERCarl Creeger, a long-time staff member in the Psychology Department and Center for Perceptual Systems, died on March 4, 2009 at the age of 54. Carl worked as the department's electronics expert for many years before moving to the laboratories of Bill Geisler, Randy Diehl, and Duane Albrecht as a computer programmer and designer of computer interfaces. According to Bill Geisler, "he contributed greatly to all of our research programs and he deserves a good bit of the credit for whatever success we achieved. Carl was a very friendly and easy-going person who was fun to be around and to learn from. He will be greatly missed." A memorial service was held for Carl at the Pickle Road Compound (202 Pickle Rd) on Saturday, March 21, 2009. |
