Notes:

1. RHE 306 and E 316K are requirements for both Liberal Arts and pre-med and are included in the pre-med GPA. Placement credit is available in both courses.  Check with the Instructional Assessment and Evaluation (BWY) office for more information on placement credit.  Check with the Health Professions Office (HPO) in GRG 234 before claiming a grade or credit for any course fulfilling pre-med requirements.

2. If an alternate to the foreign language is substituted, additional elective hours may be needed to complete degree requirements.

3. M 305G is not a medical school admission requirement; however, it is a prerequisite for M 408C.  Graduation in four years would be facilitated by placement credit in M 305G. If that is not possible, summer coursework is likely. Check with the HPO before claiming a grade or credit for any course fulfilling pre-med requirements.

4. Many pre-med courses are sequential so please pay close attention to prerequisites (e.g. M 305G is a co-requisite for CH 301 and prerequisite for M 408C; you must be registered or have credit for CH 301 before taking BIO 311C, etc.).  One semester of calculus will usually satisfy the medical school admission requirement; however, the recommended PHY 317 sequence requires either M 408C or M 408K & 408L.

5. Fulfills lower-division writing component.

6. Liberal Arts students must complete thirty-six (36) hours of upper-division coursework.  Completion of the major and minor will account for twenty-seven (27) of these hours.  The additional nine (9) hours can come from Liberal Arts area requirements and/or electives.  Included in these hours must be at least one upper-division writing component.

7. One semester of biochemistry is required by the medical program in San Antonio and is highly recommended by all other programs.  The HPO recommends taking CH 369 to fulfill this requirement during the junior year.  Full lists of specific requirements for Texas medical schools are maintained by the HPO.

8. There are three other sequences for PHY.  The sequence listed is most appropriate for psychology/pre-med majors and requires either M 408C or M 408K & L as a prerequisite.  For information concerning the applicability of the other sequences, please contact the HPO.

9. Generally it is a good idea to meet the Liberal Arts requirements in the first two years.  However, if students follow a pre-medical sequence, students should plan to complete the medical school admission requirements by the end of their junior year to take the MCAT and meet medical school application deadlines.

10. Six (6) hours of upper-division BIO are needed for pre-medical requirements; however, this suggested four-year plan assumes that one declares Biological Sciences as her/his minor which brings the total number of upper-division hours in BIO to nine (9). A list of suggested classes from BIO are available at the HPO.  If an alternate minor is desired, additional hours may be needed.

Other issues:

A slightly lower course load is suggested during the spring semester of the third year to facilitate study for the MCAT.
