PSY 357 Perception of memory in compulsive checkers

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROJECT

Advising | Admission to Psychology | Course Information | Career Planning | UT Resources

Faculty:

Michael J. Telch, Ph.D.

Contact:

Jesse Cougle Cougle@mail.utexas.edu

Description:

Evidence of memory deficits have led some to hypothesize that compulsive checking may be a rational attempt to compensate for poor memory (Ecker & Engelkamp, 1995). Other researchers (Rachman, 2002; Salkovskis & Kirk, 1997) argue that checking may be caused by poor confidence in memory, rather than a specific memory deficit. This has led investigators to examine beliefs that checkers have about their memory. We are carrying out research examining memory performance and beliefs about memory in compulsive checkers using different memory tests.

Qualifications:

Research assistants should have good interpersonal skills, as much interaction with study participants is required. Previous research experience would be beneficial.

Duties:

Duties will include scheduling and running memory tests using undergraduate students. Work schedule is highly flexible. Minimal data entry may be required.
