PSY 357 Testosterone predicts leadership?

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROJECT

Advising | Admission to Psychology | Course Information | Career Planning | UT Resources

Faculty:

Robert Josephs, Ph.D.

Contact:

Jennifer Guinn Sellers jenguinn@mail.utexas.edu

Description:

Who would have thought that testosterone, the hormone responsible for facial hair, secondary sexual characteristics, and big bulging muscles would also exert powerful effects on behavior?  Mounting evidence my colleagues and I have collected implicate testosterone in a person’s desire for leadership.  It appears that people high in testosterone have an unquenchable desire for power, whereas people low in testosterone actually shy away from leadership, preferring the simpler life.   I’m currently testing this hypothesis.

Qualifications:

You must be available between the hours of noon and 5pm to run this study.  (It’s the only time we can reliably measure testosterone!).  You must also be reliable, conscientious and able to work independently.  Interest in pursuing a graduate degree is preferred but not necessary (e.g., med school, law school; graduate programs in psychology, biology, etc.).

Duties:

Students will be involved in all areas of the experimental process.  These duties range from recruiting participants, independently running experimental sessions, and some coding.
