Description:
To discover if any differences exist between members of Eastern Culture and members of Western Culture in terms of person perception. If one examines newspaper articles and online resources across cultures, one will find that information is usually construed in one of two directions: socially bound or personally bound. Specifically, US culture tends to report information in a very personal/individualistic way: traits, personality characteristics, and preferences. While Eastern cultures tend to report things in a very social/collectivistic way: group membership, family, and context specific ways. We want to see if this kind of information seeking/reporting can be found during person perception, specifically, when meeting someone for the first time.
Qualifications:
Be confident and understanding of cultural differences. Be able and willing to become familiar with a computer program written in PERL. A background in computer-programming would be a plusbut not required. Be familiar with greeting and debriefing participants. Have a flexible schedule--preferably have a few afternoons free to work and examine results.
Duties:
- Welcoming and debriefing participants
- Helping design and give suggestions about the program we will be using
- Analyzing data in SPSS.
- Each week the student will need to log what they did that week.
