UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROJECT

Advising | Admission to Psychology | Course Information | Career Planning | UT Resources

Faculty:

Philip B. Gough, Ph.D.

Contact:

Robyn Honig rhonig@mail.utexas.edu

Description:

Prior research has shown a link between reading comprehension ability and the suppression of irrelevant word meanings. For example, in the sentence, “The rock star shook hands with the screaming fan,” the word “fan” does not refer to an air circulation device! A link between general suppression ability and working memory efficiency has also been shown, but there is currently little credible research examining the relationship between working memory efficiency and reading comprehension ability. In addition, numerous reading comprehension tests exist, but they all test reading comprehension differently. We seek to determine whether some comprehension tests are linked to meaning suppression ability or working memory efficiency more than others.

Qualifications:

A responsible, dependable, punctual student who enjoys working with people and computerized experiments. No programming experience is necessary.

Duties:

Hours will vary, and most of your duties will involve running experiments. Other duties might include administering large-scale tests, preparing experimental materials, and library research. During busy weeks in which we have a lot of participants coming to the lab, we will need you to work for up to 10 hours. During those weeks in which we do not have any participants, we will need you to work for up to 3 hours.
