Faculty:

Bill Swann, Ph.D.

Contact:

Yitai Seih, yitai@mail.utexas.edu

Description:

The goal of this study is to explore cultural differences on self-verification from the perspective of cognition and behavior.  This study will be conducted in the University of Texas at Austin and National Taiwan University.

Qualifications:

The assistant must be patient, responsible, and good at communication.  This study is about culture, so the prospective assistant must be a native speaker of English.  It would be better if you have a plan of graduate school and you are also interested in diverse culture.  Students should have the intention of enrolling for at least 2 semesters of work in the laboratory and must sign up for research credit hours (e.g., PSY 357) while working in the lab during fall and spring semesters. (Signing up during the summer is optional.)  Coursework in social psychology is helpful but not required.  This laboratory is especially appropriate for pre- graduate school research experience, but all interested and motivated students are encouraged to apply.

Duties:

We are recruiting participants and conducting experiment.  Undergraduate assistants will also read research papers and attend group meetings for training.  Hours vary, but 10-12 hours of work per week are expected. We may offer the opportunity to learn Statistical Software (e.g., SPSS), some functions in EXCEL (e.g., use EXCEL to do simple statistical test, or to randomize the observations), and advanced statistics (e.g., General Linear Model) for research assistant if assistants are interested in how to analyze data.
