Group Dynamics and Communication

Faculty:

James Pennebaker, Ph.D.

Contact:

Yla Tausczik tausczik@mail.utexas.edu

Description:

My research focuses on understanding communication between group members. I look at how language reflects changes in group dynamics, differs depending on a group members role within the group. I investigate what communication methods produce better coordination and how language is used to increase intergroup conflict. I am currently working on a number of ongoing research projects: instant message conversations between scientists at work, instant message conversations between students getting to know each other, posted messages between Wikipedia contributors.

Qualifications:

I want students who will enjoy research and as a result be better able to ask their own research questions. I am interested in individuals who have a strong interest in either social psychology or computer mediated communication. I am especially interested in individuals with a solid GPA who are reliable, conscientious, thoughtful, curious, and hard-working.

Duties:

RAs will participate in the design, execution, and analysis phases of the experiment alongside the primary investigator. Specific tasks include downloading texts from the web, cleaning language data, identifying linguistic elements, coding texts for psychological content.
