PSY 357 Undergraduate Project DescriptionsFALL 2009Depression and everyday behaviorFaculty:James Pennebaker, Ph.D. Christopher Beevers, Ph.D. Contact:Jenna Baddeley jenna@mail.utexas.edu Description:Our lab is pursuing a couple of major lines of research in the coming semester: (1) Behavioral correlates of depression: Investigating behavioral differences between depressed individuals and healthy controls using a data set of sound recordings capturing participants’ everyday lives and environments via a portable recording device. Some of our data collection and data analysis efforts will focus on differences between depressed and control individuals’ behavior in the context of romantic partnerships. (2) Effects of expressive writing on marital adjustment in military couples: Analyzing data from an expressive writing study. Research assistants may be involved in all aspects of these and other ongoing projects. Requirements: Research assistants must be able to commit to working 8-10 hours each week, but can set their hours to fit around their course schedule. Research assistants who have career interests in psychology and/or who can commit to two semesters in the lab are given preference. Duties: Duties will include data collection, transcription, coding, and rating; literature searches; and data analysis. Research are encouraged to collaborate in hypothesis generation and to answer their own research questions using our data. Many previous research assistants have presented posters at academic conferences based on their work in our lab.
