GRADUATE PROGRAM

Financial Support and Fees

Sources of financial support available to graduate students through the University and the Department of Psychology are fellowships, research assistantships (RAs), teaching assistantships (TAs), and training grants. All admitted students receive financial support, and we are also able to provide financial support to all qualified advanced students. The standard appointment period for a TA or RA is 20 hours a week. The current semester stipend for a 20 hour per week appointment for first-year students is $6300. It is $6900 for students with more than 30 hours of graduate credit. The stipends for RAs are comparable. Students from out of state who are employed for 20 hours per week as a RA or TA are considered Texas residents for tuition purposes and thus pay the resident tuition rate. Moreover, TAs appointed for 20 hours a week receive a tuition remission of $2975 per semester which matches the cost of tuition and basic fees for the required minimum registration of nine hours (three courses). The tuition for RAs is typically paid by the faculty sponsor. Students who are employed for 20 hours per week as either RAs or TAs are eligible for staff benefits which includes group health insurance and premium payments for this insurance. (The benefits information provided here pertains to students admitted in Fall, 2003 and before. The benefits package may change in future years.)

A limited number of fellowships, awarded on a competitive basis, are available to first-year graduate students. Departmental faculty nominate students for these fellowships. We encourage students to seek external support from sources such as the National Research Council, the National Science Foundation, and private foundations. Students who receive external support also qualify for the residential tuition rate.

The Office of Student Financial Services [Box 7758—University Station, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas 78713-7758 or 512/475-6200] administers the federal loan and work-study programs and will mail you information and application forms. The recommended mailing date for the application for federal student aid is March 1st.
