Philip Gough obtained his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota. He then taught at Indiana University and UCLA before joining the faculty at Texas in 1967, where in 1993 he was appointed to the Bush Professorship.

Gough research concerns reading and its acquisition. His research has been funded by NICHD and NSF; it is currently funded by the Texas Education Agency. His current research has two foci: one is the reading process, the other its acquisition.

Gough served as Chair of the Department of Psychology from, 1975 to 1979, and as Co-Director and Director of the Center for Cognitive Science from 1977 to 1987. He served as Editor of the Reading Research Quarterly from 1985 to 1991. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, and the International Academy for Research on Learning Disabilities, in 1986 he was awarded the Oscar S. Causey Award for Outstanding Contributions to Reading Research.

Gough teaches an undergraduate course in the Psychology of Reading every semester, a graduate course on Reading Acquisition each fall, and Experimental Psychology each spring. He is currently directing the research of six graduate students.
