DAN J. NEAL, PH.D.
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW
I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Syracuse University (SU) in 2004, as well as an M.S.in Applied Statistics from SU in 2001. My research focuses on college student substance use, with two particular emphases: 1) the general association between alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences at both an aggregate and event level; and 2) the role of self-regulatory processes in the occurrence of risky behaviors while intoxicated. Also, because measurement issues are critical in psychological research, much of my work has a strong psychometric component. Since arriving in the SAHARA LAB in September 2004, Dr. Fromme and I have started to collaborate on projects that are designed to further probe the use-consequences association, and the impact of self-regulation on this association. We intend to incorporate a variety of research methodologies, including survey assessment, event-level analysis (e.g., web-based daily drinking diaries), and lab-based experimental procedures, in an effort to provide convergent evidence for our findings.

Quantitatively, my interests have been shaped by the types of data typically collected in the addictions field. I have spent considerable time working with analytical approaches that do not rely on the assumption of normally distributed errors (an unlikely condition with alcohol data). Bootstrapping is a computer-intensive nonparametric resampling approach that allows for empirically based estimates of confidence intervals and sampling distributions of statistics. Generalized linear models, and their extensions, are models based on probability distributions other than the Gaussian or Normal distribution. I have found that these approaches provide flexibility in addressing many of my substantive research questions. In the future, I hope to become more active with regards to statistical research by conducting simulation studies to follow up on the theoretical and applied issues related to these approaches.
On a more personal note, I love the outdoors and get out every chance I get. I'm an avid hiker/packpacker, and have spent considerable time in the Cascades (Washington State) and the Adirondacks (New York). I am looking forward to exploring the Texas Hill Country, as well as making trips out to Big Bend and the Guadalupe Mountains for some back-country experiences.
